To live the Holy Week in Ventimiglia di Sicilia is to leaf through a script where every scene is a perfect synthesis of folklore and liturgy. Where each action is charged to commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus in precise dramatizations from which the earthly and human content of the Event emerge.
This script runs through the thread of history in Ventimiglia di Sicilia because of its intimate connection to the religiosity of Ventimiglia`s founder, Princess Beatrice Ventimiglia del Carretto who, in 1628, scarcely a year after the founding of the city wanted to dedicate a church to the Immaculate Conception, thereby confirming her family`s particular devotion for the Virgin Mary.
More than three and one half centuries have passed since then, and the religiosity has remained intact and favored the birth of a pure sentiment: a profound sense of belonging. In this link to its own history, in the rapport between daily activities and the eternal, between God and man, between that which is inaccessible and that which is nearby, stands the worth and essence of the simple gestures that each year renew the ancient faith and make the Holy Week in Ventimiglia one of Sicily`s most engrossing religious events.
